Nodeclipse Git Addon associates *.git* files with TextEditor.
Why? 1) Those files are often opened in external text editor, e.g. - Bug 412518 - Changing file associations causes Eclipse Kepler to crash (was .gitignore value causes Eclipse crash) https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=412518
2) Nice icon for .git* files
Warning
.gitattributes file will not be fully used by EGit/JGit (Eclipse git implementation),
see Bug 342372 - support gitattributes.
UPDATE It was closed with status "partially supported" in 2016

Raise bugs against JGit if you run into error or wish newer for Eclipse EGit/JGit.
