Offers tight integration of system file manager (Explorer, Nautilus, Konqueror, Mac Finder, ...) and the shell (cmd.exe/terminal) in Eclipse.

Despite its name, its not Windows-only but works cross-platform (Windows, Mac and a bunch of Linux distros are supported out of the box).

Every now and then when working with Eclipse you'd like to examine a file or a folder inside the Eclipse workspace with your file manager or open a shell/cmd.exe in this location. Or you edit a file in Eclipse and would like to open the parent folder of this file in the file manager or shell. Or the file you are editing contains a string which references another file in the filesystem and you would like to do some of the things mentioned above with that referenced file. This plug-in gives you a convenient way to do all this by adding a few entries to Eclipse's context menus. Furthermore, it offers a different, more convenient way to issue any shell/dos command you like through customizable menu commands. Last but not the least this plug-in offers a tighter integration of the clip board, so copying a file's/folder's path to the clip board is only two mouse clicks (instead of opening the Properties dialog and selecting the path manually).

Great addition to eclipse

Submitted by Ferry Cools on Fri, 2019-03-22 03:58

Save me a lot of handling when I need access to my files in other programs or shells.

I hope a 2019-03 comatible release will come out soon.

great for git users

Submitted by Brian Sheldon on Mon, 2014-01-27 13:54

I installed this a while back but never really used it until we started moving from CVS to Git. This makes doing a 'git status' etc so much easier. I wrote an external tool to do a 'git status' but startexplorer is nice for other commands.

We have lots of web apps with lots of components so leaving a command line window up all the time doesn't cut it (since we have to bounce around to lots of different projects in our workspaces).

The egit plugin works most of the time but we do have some strangeness going on that makes me want to go to the command line to make sure eclipse or egit aren't being stupid.

yes, it is

Submitted by Paul Verest on Mon, 2014-03-31 05:30

Have the similar usage pattern: most of the time EGIt, but back to shell for some rare operation or checks, e.g. `git remote --verbose`

"external tool to do a 'git status'" is great idea, but I guess it would need to be for every project.

I came across by accident, but now this plugin is mandatory, saves me lot of time to open the shell or the file explorer easily. thanks!

One of my favorite plugins

Submitted by Ed Brannin on Fri, 2013-01-25 14:02

This is one of the few plugins I always install in Springsource Tool Suite. It's really convenient to select a file and press ctrl-alt-E to reveal it in Explorer, or crl-alt-D to open a command prompt in its directory!

Thanks to Ed for referencing shortcuts !

Yes, it very convenient to open folder or file in Explorer.
