Details

OPTIMIS is a project funded by the European Commision which rised with the vision that hybrid clouds will become commonplace, realized by private clouds interacting with a rich ecosystem of public and other cloud providers. OPTIMIS is aimed at enabling organizations to automatically externalize services and applications to trustworthy and auditable cloud providers in the hybrid model. Consequently, OPTIMIS believes its activities will support and facilitate an ecosystem of providers and consumers that will benefit from the optimal operation of services and infrastructures. The optimization covers the full lifecycle of services and their interactions.

One of the most important parts of the service lifecycle is the Service construction. For this purpose OPTIMIS provides a cloud unaware programming model which is not bound to any Cloud provider API or cloud provider properties and as easy as programming sequential Java aplications. Th developer just have to select some portions of application code and define them as Orchestration and Core Elements. Core elements are methods that are executed several times in an the application code or can require certain computational resources. So, they are candidates to be executes in remote VMs in the cloud. Orchestration elements are the application method which contains different calls to Core Elements.
For facilitating the development of applications with this Programming model, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center has developed an Eclipse plug-in. This plug-in offer the functionalities to create applications from scratch by creating new Orchestration and Core Elements or importing existing ones by defining element from existing binary code. Based on the element definition and the computational constraints, the plugin instrument compile and package application, create the VM images and deploy them in an OPTIMIS Cloud Infrastructure.
