itemis CREATE

itemis CREATE (formerly YAKINDU Statechart Tools) lets you build the behavior of complex systems as state machines, in a visual way. You can simulate and test that behavior while you're still modeling, and code generators turn the model into readable source code for your target platform.

Editing

The editor combines graphical and textual notation. States, transitions, and state hierarchies are graphical elements, while declarations and actions are written in a textual notation with content assist. The editor is built around this mix, so most of the work happens without leaving the diagram.

Validation

Statecharts are checked for syntax and semantics as you edit. Typical findings are unreachable states, dead ends, and references to unknown events. Violations show up as warning and error markers on the model elements that caused them.

Simulation

Structural checks only get you so far, since you can't tell whether a statechart behaves correctly just by looking at it. The integrated simulation engine runs your statechart directly in the modeling environment. Active states are highlighted in the editor, and a dedicated simulation perspective gives you execution controls (start, stop, pause, resume), variable inspection and assignment, and event raising.

Testing

SCTUnit brings unit testing to statechart models. A test checks which states are active and what values variables hold as the state machine runs. The syntax stays close to general-purpose unit testing frameworks, and the integrated coverage report shows which parts of the model your tests actually reach.

Code Generation

itemis CREATE generates code for C, C++, Java, and Python, and it exports statecharts as SCXML. The generators follow a code-only approach and don't depend on an additional runtime library. The result has a well-defined interface, integrates with existing client code, and is structured for efficient execution.

Target Platforms

The generated code runs on a broad range of microcontrollers, including Arduino, ESP32, and devices from STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, and others. It works with embedded operating systems such as freeRTOS and VxWorks, and in bare-metal scenarios.
